No. Never. Not if you want to be considered a true magician.

It is part of the Magician’s code to never tell your secrets to your audience. Being a magician means cloaking yourself in mystery. Secrecy to how your little ‘miracles’ are performed is paramount. Think about the first time you saw a magician in action. You were probably busting to know how she pulled that rabbit out of a hat or how he sawed his assistant in half then put her back together. If you knew the secret to all these wondrous acts, would you have come back for more? Would you have wanted to become a magician yourself? The answer is probably no.

If you tell your audience how a trick was done not only do you destroy the mystery for you, you destroy it for all other magicians who perform that trick or similar ones. So no matter how many times your audience asks you to reveal your secret, DON’T TELL THEM. They will persist but you have to be strong. Remember a good magician never reveals his secrets.

It is also important never to do the same trick more than once for your audience. Performing it over and over again will give them the opportunity to see how you do it or ‘find you out’. The surprise of the first time you performed the trick is gone once you repeat it. They may be able to work out your secret and you don’t want that. All the fun is gone once the mystery has disappeared. Your audience may feel a little stupid for having been fooled so easily by such a simple trick. Once the wonder has gone they may not be so keen to be ‘fooled’ again by your next trick.

There is one exception for when you are allowed to tell the secret of your magic tricks, and that is if you are teaching someone a trick that is interested in becoming a magician – otherwise how else would other would-be magicians learn the trade? You may want to only tell the learner the secrets of some of the well-known tricks, not share your own specially developed trick and that’s okay. If they are really keen they will learn the simple ones then come back for more. Remember you had to learn the trick and practice it so you could call yourself a magician. Other aspiring magicians must do the same thing.

A true magician never tells his secrets and if you are serious about becoming a magician you should take the Magician’s Oath which goes something like this: "As a magician I promise to never reveal the secret of any illusion to a non-magician, without first swearing them to the Magician's Oath. I promise never to perform any illusion for any non-magician, without first practicing the effect until I can perform it well enough to maintain the illusion of magic."
